EVERY
FIRST RESPONDER HAS A DAY ONE.
We’re working to ensure every first responder begins their career with the mental health education, resilience skills, and leadership support they deserve.
HELP CHANGE A FIRST RESPONDER’S DAY ONE
Why We Exist
The Day One Foundation exists to advance the mental health, resilience, and long-term well-being of first responders by ensuring proactive education, training, and support begin on Day One—not after a crisis. Through charitable giving, strategic partnerships, and community support, we work to remove financial barriers, strengthen organizational cultures, and make life-saving mental health resources accessible to every first responder, regardless of where they serve.
Our ultimate vision is a future where comprehensive mental health and resilience training is a standard part of every first responder’s career from the very beginning, making the need for our Foundation no longer necessary.
The Problem
From the first day of the academy, first responders receive hundreds—often thousands—of hours of training. They learn how to fight fires, respond to medical emergencies, enforce the law, rescue victims, and perform under extraordinary pressure.
But one of the most important aspects of the profession is often overlooked.
The emotional and psychological realities of a career spent responding to trauma, loss, violence, and human suffering.
Over time, cumulative stress can affect physical health, mental well-being, relationships, decision-making, job performance, and organizational culture. Families feel the impact, departments experience the consequences, and communities ultimately depend on healthy first responders.
The good news is that these outcomes are not inevitable.
Research and experience continue to demonstrate that proactive mental health education, resilience training, supportive leadership, and healthy organizational cultures can strengthen individuals, improve performance, reduce stigma, and better prepare first responders for the realities of a lifetime of service.
At the Day One Foundation, we believe these conversations and skills should not begin after a critical incident or personal crisis.
They should begin on Day One.
We Prepare First Responders to Save Others. We Haven’t Done Enough to Prepare Them to Protect Themselves.
Our Mission
The Day One Foundation exists to ensure every first responder begins their career with the mental health education, resilience skills, and organizational support they need to thrive throughout a lifetime of service.
Through charitable giving, strategic partnerships, and community support, we remove financial barriers and expand access to proactive education, training, and wellness resources—helping build stronger first responders, healthier organizations, and safer communities.
Our Vision
A future where every first responder receives comprehensive mental health and resilience education from Day One, supported by leaders and organizational cultures that make wellness the standard—not the exception.
Service Before Self
Everything we do begins with those who dedicate their lives to serving others. We exist to support first responders, their families, and the communities they protect by honoring their commitment with meaningful action.
Leadership Matters
Healthy organizational cultures begin with healthy leaders. We believe leaders play a critical role in reducing stigma, supporting wellness, and creating environments where first responders can thrive.
Integrity & Stewardship
We are committed to earning trust through transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship of every donation, partnership, and opportunity entrusted to our Foundation.
Strength Through Connection
No first responder should carry the weight of the profession alone. We value collaboration, peer support, strong families, and community partnerships that build lasting resilience.
Our Values
Prevention Before Crisis
We believe the greatest opportunity to improve mental health is before a crisis occurs. By providing education, resilience training, and support from Day One, we can help create healthier careers and stronger organizations.
Hope for the Future
We believe the future of public safety can be different. Every recruit educated, every leader empowered, every family supported, and every department strengthened brings us closer to a profession where mental health and resilience are standard from Day One.
How We Help
-
We help expand access to proactive mental health and resilience education that prepares first responders for the emotional realities of a lifetime of service. By supporting evidence-informed training from the beginning of a career, we help build stronger individuals before challenges become crises.
-
Healthy organizational cultures begin with healthy leaders. We support leadership education that equips supervisors, officers, and executives to recognize stress, reduce stigma, foster resilience, and create workplaces where behavioral health is valued and supported.
-
Financial limitations should never prevent first responders from accessing life-saving education. Through scholarships and grant funding, we help agencies, recruit academies, and individual first responders gain access to behavioral health training and wellness initiatives.
-
The effects of public safety service extend beyond the individual first responder. We support educational resources and programs that strengthen spouses, partners, children, and families, helping them better understand the unique challenges of a career in public safety.
-
Lasting change requires collaboration. We work alongside fire departments, law enforcement agencies, EMS organizations, dispatch centers, corrections, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, and community partners to expand access to behavioral health resources and strengthen organizational wellness.
-
We believe tomorrow's solutions require today's investment. The Foundation supports research, innovation, and the development of evidence-informed programs that improve behavioral health outcomes and help shape the future of first responder wellness.

Every First Responder. Every Stage of the Journey.
Why It Matters
For generations, first responders have received extensive training to protect others—but little preparation for protecting themselves from the cumulative emotional impact of the profession.
The result is seen in rising rates of stress-related injuries, burnout, depression, anxiety, substance misuse, relationship challenges, and suicide. These challenges affect not only individual first responders, but also their families, agencies, and the communities they serve.
Yet there is reason for hope.
Research continues to demonstrate that proactive mental health education, resilience training, supportive leadership, peer support, and healthy organizational cultures can improve well-being, reduce stigma, strengthen performance, and create healthier careers.
At the Day One Foundation, we believe the greatest opportunity to change outcomes isn't after a crisis—it's before one ever occurs.
By investing in first responders from the very beginning of their careers, we can help build stronger individuals, healthier organizations, and safer communities.
Every recruit trained.
Every leader empowered.
Every family supported.
Every department strengthened.
Each one brings us one step closer to a future where mental health and resilience education are as fundamental to public safety as physical fitness, technical skills, and operational readiness.
That's why it matters.
Since 2017, more U.S. first responders have died by suicide than in the line of duty.
Thousands of hours are dedicated to operational training, yet behavioral health education is often limited or inconsistent across agencies.
Early education, supportive leadership, and healthy organizational culture can improve resilience, reduce stigma, and strengthen long-term well-being.
Our vision is simple: Every first responder begins their career with mental health and resilience education from Day One.
Changing a first responder's future begins by changing their Day One.
Our Vision
Success Means We Are No Longer Needed.
Most organizations measure success by how much they grow.
We measure success by the change we create.
The Day One Foundation was established to solve a problem—not simply to build another nonprofit.
Our vision is a future where every firefighter, law enforcement officer, EMS professional, dispatcher, correctional officer, and other first responder begins their career with comprehensive mental health and resilience education as a standard part of recruit training.
A future where leaders actively support behavioral health.
Where organizations foster cultures of resilience and well-being.
Where families are recognized as an essential part of the support system.
And where seeking help is viewed as a sign of professionalism and strength.
When that becomes the standard across public safety, the need for the Day One Foundation will have been fulfilled.
Until then, every recruit trained, every department strengthened, every leader empowered, and every life positively impacted moves us one step closer to that future.
Because changing the future of public safety begins by changing Day One.
I would make this section visually different from the rest of the homepage.
Background: White or very light gray with lots of open space.
Centered headline: Success Means We Are No Longer Needed.
Short paragraphs: Easy to read on desktop and mobile.
A simple timeline graphic running across the bottom:
Today → Education & Awareness → Leadership & Culture Change → Behavioral Health Becomes Standard → Mission Fulfilled
Finish the section with a bold callout:
We're not building a Foundation for the sake of having one.
We're building a future where every first responder starts their career stronger than the generation before them.
